For the past oh 15 years its been drilled into our heads that market is the great god of capitalism,that the market decides the survival of the fittest.Not true. It is the US Congress.In the case of the Big Three (theres a conceit for you)it was the UAW that helped the Senate decide its fate.

If I'm getting paid 75 bucks an hour and am asked to take a cut in pay to say 45 dollars an hour and help my employer survive and therefore save my job would I take it. Yep.
